It’s time to reveal one of the most eagerly expected appearances of the next edition of BCBF. Last week at the Bologna Children’s Book Fair Grand Tour stand in Frankfurt, the new BCBF visual identity for 2027 was finally presented to our community!

And speaking of illustration, while our Pinocchio exhibition continues to tour the world, the countdown has begun to the closing date for entries to the 2027 Illustrators Exhibition.

The Tales and Tailors of Children's Content

Mariia Rizak, a young Ukrainian illustrator, engraver and textile artist born in 2003, has created the visual identity for the upcoming Bologna Children’s Book Fair, under the guidance of Studio Chialab Design.

Inspired by folklore and cultural heritage, her work blends illustration with textile techniques, bringing to life the theme of BCBF 2027, ‘The Tales and Tailors of Children’s Content’. Needle and thread thus become tools for creating landscapes and narratives that will accompany the Fair until April 2027.

But how is a visual identity created? Chialab takes us behind the scenes of the workshop with Mariia to glimpse experimentation, insight and days of intense collaboration

Take a look behind the scenes of the 2027 Workshop
11 years of stories, images and new talents

The workshop with Mariia Rizak is the eleventh edition of the Visual Identity Workshop organised by BCBF in collaboration with Studio Chialab Design.

Launched in 2017, each year the project assigns the creation of the Fair’s visual identity to a young talent selected from among the finalists of the Illustrators’ Exhibition, through a process of co-design with Chialab, which has been responsible for BCBF’s visual identity since 2009.

Ten years of workshops, ten artists and ten distinct visual worlds: a special publication traces the key figures and stories behind this project, which has now become a BCBF tradition.

The 2027 Illustrators Exhibition: the last chance to take part!

Illustrators from all over the world have until 31 October 2026 (we're pleased to extend the deadline by a few days, following requests from many of you!) to submit their work to the Illustrators Exhibition, which has been organised by BCBF for 60 years and now tours the world after each edition of BCBF.

As always, the selected illustrators will be featured in the Illustration Annual and will automatically be entered for the Bologna Children’s Book Fair Fundación SM International Illustration Award and the Ars in Fabula Grant Award.

Furthermore, all finalists will automatically qualify for the Portfolio Marathon in Bologna, will be eligible for the Portfolio Award (with a trip to Shanghai for CCBF27 up for grabs) and will receive free entry to BCBF27.

But that’s not all, one of the finalists of the next Illustrators Exhibition will be chosen as the artist tasked to design the visual identity for BCBF 2028.

The deadline is fast approaching: don’t leave it until the last minute!

How to Take Part
Pinocchio tours the world, in new clothes!

From Bologna to Singapore and Buenos Aires, the exhibition “Italian Excellence. Pinocchio’s New Clothes” (organised by BCBF and curated by the Accademia Drosselmeier) is travelling around the world, taking in trade fairs, galleries, museums and cultural events. In the coming days this international tour will have reached more than 20 destinations, showcasing 50 illustrations by 27 established artists and 23 emerging talents selected through an international competition.

The latest stop is Milan, where, last Tuesday the Mondadori Foundation launched its new 2026-2027 season of events, centred on the theme of “true or false”, featuring our very own exhibition of the iconic puppet and his lies. Over the next two months, the exhibition will be on display at the Mondadori Foundation Workshop (keep 18 December free, a major closing event is planned).

Furthermore, from next Monday, as part of the Week of the Italian Language in the World, you’ll be able to visit the exhibition at numerous Italian Cultural Institutes. And from 24 November, to mark the bicentenary of Carlo Collodi’s birth, new stops will be added to this journey around the world, which will continue into 2027.
